I’ve had the privilege of facilitating dozens of Executives entering new positions through the Transition Acceleration Process or “TAP.” Shared practices have become evident among those that have been able to quickly take advantage of the opportunity presented to them and thereby set themselves up for future success. These practices led me to create the “TAP Success Engine” shown below to identify key success factors in a variety of transitional situations.
The first thing I tell my clients as they enter new situations is that TAP is a “front loaded” process. Successful transitions begin with:
- Situational Judgment – Fully understanding the definition of transition success,
- Wins > Derailers – Being able to identify the wins that need to be accumulated along the way, as well as, the potential “derailers” that could delay or prevent a successful transition and,
- Attributes Deployment – Identifying in advance the personal attributes (skills, knowledge and abilities, as well as, weaknesses) that will most likely come into play as a result of the transition.
I’ve developed an easy-to-use TAP Success Engine Template to assess the qualities listed above and implement individualized next steps when facing transitions at work, including: promotions to a new position, leading a new project, learning a new skill that will soon need to be put into use, etc. I’ve used the model and template for dozens of clients and during personal transitions, as well.
I’m excited to offer this template as a free resource for leaders and individuals faced with a professional transition. This tool will help to identify early wins, share insight for potential derailers and establish a blueprint to accelerate success.
